Dear members and friends,
Cine Brasil is back! During the last months, we were at the backstage working hard to get the authorizations and to set the fall / winter 2007 movie selection.
We are glad to invite you to enjoy our new series: “The Brazilian Life Style – Music, Comedy and Reality.” It blends Brazilian country-side perspectives, history, traditional music, and comedy.
We start this Friday (Oct. 5th) with “Two sons of Francisco” an inspiring movie celebrated as a national symbol of persistence and success to Brazilian families. “Two sons of Francisco” (2005) is built upon the true story of a leading country music duo in Brazil , Zezé di Camargo & Luciano. The film begins in 1962 in an impoverished region of the state of Goiás, in central Brazil . Francisco, a tenant farmer, dedicated father and passionate for music, decided to give a better life to two of his nine sons through a career in music.
A movie that surpassed expectations, “Two sons of Francisco” became the Brazilian largest hit of 2005, selling about five millions tickets. It also won a dozen of Brazilian and international awards for best movie, actor, actress, young performer, supporting actors, music, and sound.
Two sons of Francisco this Friday Oct. 5th at “Espace La Gitana” (24, Av. Mont-Royal West, Suite 207 ). Space and bar open at 7:00pm. Movie starts at 7:30. All movies are original version with English subtitles. The tickets cost $5 for members or $10 for non-members (including the membership). Dear BRAZA's members and friends,
Come watch our last screening of the year: “Cazuza” – a movie containing abusive doses of love, rock, drugs, lyric poetry, alcohol, sex, and rebel madness.
Cazuza – Friday December 1st, 2006 at 7:00pm, at Espace La Gitane (24, Av. Mont-Royal West, Suite 207). The tickets cost $5 for members or $10 for non-members (including the membership).
“Cazuza – O tempo não pára” (Walter Carvalho & Sandra Werneck, 2004) is a wonderful movie produced after Cazuza’s biography written by his mother. It shows the incredible artistic development – and the even most incredible private life – of the famous Brazilian singer and poet.
Rio de Janeiro of the 80’s is the last stop of our musical trilogy and – a personal note – it sends me right back to that crazy time and to how enjoyable it was to live in Rio! The movie won seven awards at the 2005 Grande Prêmio BR do Cinema Brasileiro. I bring attention to Daniel Oliveira winning of best actor: he got just identical to Cazuza, it is almost unbelievable!
The original version of the film will be presented with English subtitles. Wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages will be available at the bar. Theatre and bar opens at 7:00 pm; Film starts at 7:30pm.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the screening,
BRAZA Team
Dear BRAZA's members and friends,
You are invited to the screening of “Durval Records” – a great non-sense suspense-comedy celebration of good Brazilian music!
Durval Records – Friday November 17th, 2006 at 7:00pm, at Espace La Gitane (24, Av. Mont-Royal West, Suite 207 ). The tickets cost $5 for members or $10 for non-members (including the membership).
The second stop of our Brazilian Musical Trip is São Paulo – the largest city of earth’s southern hemisphere with some 20.7 million inhabitants. Durval Discos (Anna Muylaert, 2002), however, depicts a somewhat nostalgic picture of this huge urban agglomeration city.
Our (anti)hero is Durval, a clumsy man on his forties, who lives with his mother and owns a small second-hand LP vinyl store. Everything changes after the arrival of a young maiden – Célia – and her daughter – Kiki. Starting as a light comedy, the narrative evolves to a dramatic and almost surreal suspense thriller. The wonderful musical revival of Brazilian 60’s and 70’s (Caetano, Sá & Guarabira, Jorge Ben, Toquinho, Vinicius, Tim Maia, and others Brazilian icons) comes as a bonus.
This movie was the overall winner of Brazilian most important festival (Gramado, 2002) with seven awards, as well as another dozen of international awards and public prizes. The ultra-realistic scenario and the initial credits shot are real artistic pearls. Come and check this musical celebration non-sense drama by yourself!
The original version of the film will be presented with English subtitles. Wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages will be available at the bar. Theatre and bar opens at 7:00 pm; Film starts at 7:30pm.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the screening,
BRAZA Team

Dear BRAZA's members and friends,
We are very glad to present Cine Brasil new series: A Brazilian Musical Trilogy!
You are invited to follow this trilogy where music plays important parts and, also, where we visit each of the three largest cities of Brazilian Southeast region: Belo Horizonte , São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
Something in the Air – Friday November 3rd, 2006 at 7:00pm, at Espace La Gitane (24, Av. Mont-Royal West, Suite 207 ). The tickets cost $5 for members or $10 for non-members (including the membership).
Something in the Air (“Uma onda no ar”, Helvécio Ratton, 2002) is inspired on the true story of a pirate FM-radio station created by a slum community in Belo Horizonte (State of Minas Gerais ). At that time, early 80’s, Misael Santos had to fight against the police to keep his dream alive. Helvécio Ratton – a mineiro himself – is the name behind this moving production where just a handful of takes here made in studio. The film was initially produced in 16mm and won the best actor and the jury award at the Brazilian Gramado Festival as well as the special jury awards at Miami , Paris and Las Palmas .
The original version of the film will be presented with English subtitles. Wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages will be available at the bar. Theatre and bar opens at 7:00 pm; Film starts at 7:30pm.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the screening,

Dear BRAZA's members and friends,
Cine Brasil is back from summer break! Thanks to your support and to the hard work of our VPs, BRAZA is growing and improving. We have a new emblem (a following message will address it), new activities (as Brazilian Dance courses, Parties…), and new movies from Brazil !!!
Our next movie – Brainstorm – will be screened this Friday September 22nd, 2006 at 7:00pm, at Espace La Gitane (24 Avenue Mont -Royal West, Suite 207 ). The tickets cost $5 for members or $10 for non-members (including the membership).
Brainstorm, or Bicho de Sete Cabeças (literally “the beast with seven-heads”), is the striking story of a teenager sent to a mental institution by his father after he is caught with marijuana in his pockets. Be prepared for a completely absurd and inhumane reality. Produced in 2001, Brainstorm won 32 prizes in Brazil and abroad, including best film, direction, actor, cinematography, music, editing, screenplay, and supporting actor! It is also one of the first appearances of the now famous (especially among girls!) Rodrigo Santoro (Carandiru, Charlie's Angels, LOST TV series...)
The original version of the film will be presented with English subtitles. Wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages will be available at the bar. Theatre and bar opens at 7:00 pm; Film starts at 7:30pm.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the screening,
